Hugh Hefner, the show’s host, first hired her as an extra, but after falling in love with Benton, she was quickly promoted to co-host. Long-lasting friendships between Hefner and Barbi propelled Benton to the top of the Playboy hierarchy. Hefner convinced Barbara Klein to change her name from Barbara Klein to the more appealing Barbi Benton. She is credited for convincing Hugh Hefner to buy the Holmby Hills Playboy Mansion in 1974.
