Barnes began in the musical theater industry. He worked for the National Youth Music Theatre for a short while when he was younger. Jamie Bell and Jude Law are among its former members. When Barnes was fifteen years old, he landed his first job as a drummer in the West End production of Bugsy Malone. He briefly performed in the pop boy band Hyrise, whose song “Leading Me On” was nominated to represent the UK in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest, but James Fox’s song “Hold Onto Our Love” won.

In 2006, Barnes made his television debut by making a guest appearance on Doctors in the UK. He joined the ensemble cast of a West End production of The History Boys the same year, playing the sexually suggestive Dakin, a role initially played by Dominic Cooper on stage and in the film The History Boys.

In the 2007 motion picture Stardust, directed by Matthew Vaughn and based on the same-titled novel by Neil Gaiman, Ben Barnes made his feature film debut as Young Dunstan. After that, Barnes portrayed Cobakka, a Russian hoodlum, in Suzie Halewood’s 2008 novel Bigga Than Ben, which was released in the UK and other European countries.

In February 2007, Barnes was chosen to play Caspian in Andrew Adamson’s film adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. According to Adamson, “Caspian is a coming of age and, to some extent, a loss of innocence narrative,” with Caspian starting very innocent before wanting vengeance and eventually letting go of it. Although many readers think of Caspian as a child, the novel implies that he is near in age to Peter, hence an older actor was sought to match William Moseley.

After meeting with the directors, Barnes, who had read the book as a child, was offered a role in the movie two and a half weeks later. He trained in horseback riding and stunts for two months in New Zealand to get ready for the project. Barnes believes that the Mediterranean dialect he used in the movie was influenced by Mandy Patinkin’s portrayal of Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride. Barnes fit in so well with Adamson and the four actors playing the Pevensies that Adamson had not anticipated choosing a British actor to play Caspian.

In the spring of 2008, Barnes finished filming his scenes with Jessica Biel as John Whittaker in Noel Coward’s romantic comedy Easy Virtue. The Australian author and director Stephan Elliott’s movie made its world premiere on September 8, 2008, at the Toronto International Film Festival. Film festivals in Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Abu Dhabi, London, and Adelaide have all screened the movie. Before its release in the US on May 22, 2009, it was also screened at the Tribeca Film Festival.

In the social comedy Easy Virtue, Larita, a stunning American widow, rushes her marriage to John Whittaker, a young Englishman. When they visit his parents in England, his mother immediately develops a strong dislike towards the new daughter-in-law. The score contains numerous Coward and jazz-era tunes, some of which Barnes sings. In the US, the film enjoyed commercial success. For the film’s distribution in the US, Latin America, and South Africa, Sony Pictures Classics spent an estimated $1 million (US).

Then, for Ealing Studios, he performed the title role in Oliver Parker’s film adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray. The movie made its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival the same month it was released in the UK on September 9, 2009.

The third book in the Narnia series, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, starred King Caspian (2010). In January 2010, Barnes began filming Killing Bono, a comedy based on Neil McCormick’s book Killing Bono: I Was Bono’s Doppelgänger, which details McCormick’s upbringing in Ireland as a blossoming rock star who is overshadowed by his friend Bono, the lead singer of U2. In the movie Killing Bono directed by Nick Hamm, Barnes played McCormick. Early in January, filming commenced in the city of Lisburn. On April 1, 2011, Killing Bono was made available in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Savoy Theater in Dublin hosted the film’s European debut. Sony Music Entertainment distributed the movie’s music all over the world.

As World War I veteran Stephen Wraysford in the play Birdsong, based on Sebastian Faulks’ book of the same name, Barnes made a triumphant comeback to the West End of London. The play, which was created for the West End stage by Rachel Wagstaff and directed by Trevor Nunn, debuted on September 28, 2010, and it will continue to do so through January 15, 2011. The Words, starring Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana, was later cast with him (2012).
