Bill Laswell is a professional bassist from the United States who also runs a record company and creates music. In Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan, R&B and funk bands were where Laswell started his professional bass career. He watched shows that mixed genres by Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, and Funkadelic, among others.
He was influenced by musicians like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Albert Ayler. In the late 1970s, Laswell relocated to New York City and was involved in the developing local music scene.
