Career
He was born in Durban, South Africa, but when he was just 10 years old, his family moved to New Zealand.
He was fascinated by cricket from an early age and spent his school years learning the sport from former Test cricketer Chris Kuggeleijn.
Watling succeeded at Hamilton Boys’ High School where he went to school. In addition to representing England in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2004, Watling and his team won the Gillette Cup twice. He scored 268 runs in six games, including half-centuries and centuries, for a world cup total that was above average.
Afterward, Watling was selected for the Northern Districts team and allowed to make his first-class debut in 2004 as a wicket-keeper. He started as the team’s opener before switching to starting the batting.
