Cissy Houston started singing when she was five years old. The Drinkard Four, a singing group that used to perform at their New Hope Baptist Church, was founded by her older siblings Anne, Larry, and Nicky. The trio then gained Lee and Marie’s involvement and adopted the moniker The Drinkard Singers; they later issued the album A Joyful Noise.

Together with Doris Troy and Dee Dee Warwick, Houston founded Sweet Inspirations in 1963. This trio sang background vocals for musicians like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and her niece Dionne Warwick, among others. After backing vocals for Elvis Presley during her final performance with Sweet Inspirations, she decided to pursue a career as a recording artist and spend more time with her kids.

She recorded several singles in 1967 before starting Sweet Inspirations. She was given a recording contract by Commonwealth United Records in 1969, and the label produced her album Presenting Cissy Houston, which featured the hits “I’ll be there” and “Be My Baby.”
