At the age of 11, he was requested to join the Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Academy, which required him to give up club rugby union. Fortunately, he was still allowed to play at Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley.

He helped Prince Henry’s win the Under-13 Yorkshire Cup in 2000, although he was out for for the entire 2001–02 season after breaking his leg in a school game. To focus on rugby union instead of football the next season, he asked Sheffield Wednesday to release him from his Academy contract. By the end of the season, he had been selected for Yorkshire Schools’ Under-15 team. In the Roses’ matchup versus Lancashire at Pontefract, which was his first experience playing representative rugby, he was chosen man of the match. He was a member of the West Yorkshire team that won the inaugural Under-15 National 10-a-side Festival in May 2002, which was played in the Commonwealth Games stadium in Manchester.

Career

As a result of Care’s progress, the Leeds Tykes Academy extended an invitation to him at the beginning of the 2003–04 season. The Tykes went on to win the National Under–19 Colts Cup, and Care was named the team’s Young Player of the Year by the Tykes’ Players.

Care spent the entire season playing fly-half for Prince Henry’s, where he helped the team win the Under-18 Yorkshire Cup and the Daily Mail Under-18 Vase final at Twickenham, where he scored 13 points in an 18-11 victory over St Columba’s College from St. Albans.

He was selected for the England Clubs Under-18 team for the Four Nations Tournament in Belfast, where he faced off against Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, to cap up the season. Additionally, he was late in being called up to the England Under-19s substitute bench against Ireland, but he did not participate.

The following year, Care made his first XV debut for Leeds Tykes against Exeter Chiefs in a pre-season friendly as a wing substitute in the second half.
His dedication to the England Under-19 team allowed him to be chosen for Team England in the rugby sevens competition at the 2004 Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo, Australia, where he had never played the sport before. After losing the Final against the hosts, Australia, 26-24, England was awarded a silver. Care finished the competition as the competition’s top try scorer with seven tries.

Early in the 2005–2006 season, he was selected to the senior England Sevens team’s core roster. In February 2006, he made his IRB Sevens series debut in Wellington. Before defeating Argentina in the Plate final, England defeated France in the Cup quarterfinals. The team then took a flight to Los Angeles, where they defeated Fiji in the Cup final to win the IRB Sevens USA competition for England for the first time.
Care was chosen for Team England for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne as a result of his performances in Wellington and Los Angeles. He won a silver medal after losing to New Zealand in the rugby sevens final, giving England its first-ever medal at a major international sporting event.

As the only rugby player from England to win gold at both the Commonwealth Youth and Senior Games, Care now has the honor.
After the 2005–2006 season, Care left Leeds Tykes and signed a three–year contract with Harlequins. He competed for England in the IRB Under-21 World Championship in France before joining his new club, making his debut against Fiji in the opening match, which England won 34-8.

He received four caps throughout the competition, including a start against Ireland in the fifth and final match. Care scored the first try in England’s 32-8 victory, which gave them fifth place and was a tournament record for them.
Care started the season as Steve So’oialo’s understudy at scrum-half for Harlequins, but after a succession of disappointing defeats, the team brought in the seasoned Andy Gomarsall, a member of England’s World Cup-winning team in 2003.

This reduced Care’s playing time and caused him to fall down the Harlequins hierarchy, but he did make starts in EDF Energy Cup and European Challenge Cup matches before making his debut in the Guinness Premiership for his new team in a historic 9-3 victory over Bath at home in January 2007.

His first position of leadership in any capacity in the game came later that month when he was chosen as captain of the England Under-20 team for the upcoming Six Nations competition.

Care won his second Premiership title on June 26, 2021, starting as Harlequins prevailed 40-38 in the highest-scoring Premiership final in history.
