When Mirra joined the Haro Bikes BMX team at age 13 in 1987, he started competing. He was sponsored by Vision Street Wear in 1989. He started racing professionally in 1992. Except in 2006, he won a medal in the X Games every year from 1995 to 2009, totaling 24 medals up until 2013.
From 2008 through 2013, he participated in rallying and rallycross as a member of Subaru Rally Team USA. He also had an interest in Ironman contests, and he took part in his first triathlon in March 2013. Because of his success, Mirra ventured outside of the world of biking.
Mirra has won 24 medals from the X Games in total. He won the ESPY for Best Male Action Sports Athlete in 2005.
