Career
Don Schumacher left drag racing in 1974 to concentrate on his young family and expand the Schumacher Electric Corporation in his native Chicago. At the beginning of his career, he had no plans to return to the sport.
By that time, the racer had established a niche for himself in the growing field of motorsports by pioneering the marketing and safety of the newest Funny Car drag racing class and competing all over the nation year-round in guaranteed-pay match races.
He took a 23-year break from racing before making a comeback alongside his son, Tony Schumacher, to start what has since grown into a drag racing dynasty.
Since the Hall of Fame’s founding in 1990 at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, he is the eleventh member of the drag racing community to be thus honored.
