Benny began studying violin at the age of six, after being born Benjamin Kubelsky to Jewish parents Meyer Kubelsky and Emma Sachs Kubelsky, who emigrated from Poland to America. His parents were extremely enthusiastic about his future as a professional violinist. Benjamin was a dreamer, but due to poor academic performance, he was expelled from school. He then joined his father’s business as a saloon owner and haberdasher.
He began playing the violin in local theaters in 1911. Benjamin Benny left his business show in 1917 to join the United States Navy during World War I. After returning from the war, he received sound pressure regarding his name from another performer, Ben Bernie, because Benjamin had developed a one-man act called “Ben K.
