Career
In March 1943, James enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Snelling. He landed as a rifleman with the 2nd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division on the Anzio Beachhead on January 22, 1944. He was transported to the 91st General Hospital in Clinton, Iowa after suffering a major injury to his right leg during the Battle of Anzio. His brother Peter paid him a visit after he got back to the States. After undergoing several operations, he was honorably discharged from the Army on January 29, 1945.
After being honorably discharged from the service in 1945, Arness started a career as a radio announcer. Arness intended to work in the film industry when she hitchhiked to Hollywood. In “The Farmer’s Daughter,” he played Peter Holstrom, Katie Holstrom’s brother played by Loretta Young.
Arness participated in “The Thing from Another World” and “Them,” two science fiction movies, despite his reputation as a Western actor. He was close friends with John Wayne, the actor. Alongside him, he co-starred in movies including Big Jim McLain, The Sea Chase, Island in the Sky, and Hondo.
