Along with his better half Renee Lawson, John Mackey helped open his first health food store, SaferWay, in Austin in 1978. (Hardy). While residing in a vegetarian accommodation, they became friends. They had left high school early.
To start SaferWay, they got $10,000 and raised an extra $35,000. At the time, Austin had a few modest health food shops.
