John McCain joined the American military to start his career. He went to Fort McNair’s National War College at that time. When he left the Navy in April 1981, he was a captain. He had received many decorations by the time he retired.
He made the decision to seek the Republican nomination in the 1st congressional district of Arizona in 1982. In 1983, McCain was chosen to serve on the House Committee on Interior Affairs. He supported a lot of the Reagan administration’s legislation at the time, particularly its foreign policy.
