Julie Kavner’s acting career got its start in 1973 when she went on The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s open call list to play one of Rhoda Morgenstern’s sisters. The show’s producer, David Davis, had convinced her to try out, but ultimately chose to cast another actress. A year later, Rhoda Morgenstern was named the lead in a Rhoda spin-off. Kavner’s debut performance as a professional actor was as the star’s sister, Brenda Morgenstern. From September 9, 1974, through December 28, 1978, the show was shown.
From there, she appeared in Revenge of the Stepford Wives, No Other Love, A Fine Romance, and Taxi as well as the comedies Bad Medicine in 1985 and Surrender in 1987.
