Career

The Sacramento Kings selected 6’3″, 77 kg point guard Kenny Smith as the sixth overall pick in the 1987 NBA draft. At the start of his career, Smith played for Bill Russell’s head coach and future Hall of Famer. Smith was an All-American at the University of North Carolina and was nicknamed The Jet.

In the 1986 FIBA World Championship, Smith represented the United States. Included among his teammates were David Robinson, Steve Kerr, and Muggsy Bogues. After Charles Smith, he was second with 14.7 points per game.

Following his trade to the Atlanta Hawks, Smith was hired by the Houston Rockets for the next six seasons. He contributed tremendously to the Rockets’ success. In his career as a basketball player, he accumulated 9,397 points with an average of 12.8 points per game. He achieved the third-highest point percentage in the NBA’s top ten. He was fifth in total minutes played, seventh in minutes per game, and tenth in overall assists.

In 1998, Smith worked as a studio analyst for Turner Sports throughout the NBA regular season and postseason. Inside the NBA, for which he collaborated with Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson Jr., and Shaquille O’Neal, earned the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Studio Show.

From 2005 through 2008, Smith served as a commentator for MSG Network’s broadcasts of New York Knicks games.
