At the age of 18, Mary Barra started working for General Motors as a co-op student. Her responsibilities included verifying fender panels and inspecting hoods, and she used the money she earned to cover her tuition. She worked as an engineer in administration, where she oversaw the Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant.
After serving as the vice president of Global Manufacturing Engineering for a year, Barra was elevated to the vice president of Global Human Resources, where she remained for two years. She was made executive vice president of global product development in 2011, where she was in charge of design. Her vice president’s duties were later expanded to encompass global purchasing and supply chain to reduce the number of automotive platforms at GM and achieve significant success.
When she was appointed CEO of General Motors in 2014, she made history as the first female CEO of a vehicle business.
