Career

Matt Wade took part in a single List. His outing for the Tasmania Tigers in the 2006–2007 Ford Ranger One Day Cup season was the only game he played for Tasmania in any format during his initial time in the country. His chances of being selected as a wicketkeeper in his home state were minimal due to the existence of Tim Paine, who was at the time considered to be Brad Haddin’s likely replacement as a wicketkeeper in the Australian national team. Wade moved to Victoria for the 2007–08 season rather than making an effort to become a specialized batter. He replaced longtime starter Adam Crosthwaite as the state’s top wicketkeeper in less than two years.
Wade scored his first century in a first-class game during the 2008–09 season. In the 2009–10 Sheffield Shield final, he came out to bat with the team at 5/60 and made 96 runs to help Victoria defeat Queensland. In a 457-run victory for Victoria over the opposition, Wade was named man of the match.
His best first-class score to date was 152, which he scored for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield in February 2015 after serving a suspension and a fine for pitch tampering in 2013. Wade played three times for Delhi in the 2011 Indian Premier League after joining the Delhi Daredevils in January of that year.
Before the 2017–18 season, Wade decided to travel to Tasmania to see his family. Wade was selected as a specialist batsman after Tim Paine returned from his international obligations even though Paine was a member of the Test team when he assumed the starting wicketkeeping position. Wade was also moved from the Melbourne Renegades to the Hobart Hurricanes for the Big Bash. He was subsequently selected for the Sheffield Shield Team of the Year in March 2018.
When Cricket Tasmania decided to sit George Bailey amid the 2018–19 season so that Bailey could focus on his batting, Wade was named captain of the Hurricanes and the Tasmanian team.
International career
Matthew Wade was initially called up to the Australian team in October 2011 for a Twenty20 International match against South Africa as a result of his performance in domestic limited-overs cricket. In a T20I encounter against India in February 2012, he made his international debut for Australia by opening the batting and scoring 72 runs off of 43 balls to win Man of the Encounter.
After that T20I series, Wade was chosen for the Australian One Day International team for the 2011–12 Commonwealth Bank Season. He won the Man of the Match award at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against India after scoring 67 runs off 69 balls. Throughout the series, he cemented his position as Australia’s go-to wicketkeeper for short overs matches and frequently batted first.
Wade was the Australian team’s limited-overs wicketkeeper during their 2011–12 tour of the West Indies. Haddin was replaced by Wade, though, when the Test wicketkeeper had to go home before the Test matches because his daughter fell ill. After making his Test debut on April 7 against the West Indies in Barbados, he notched his first Test century (106) at the third Test in Roseau.
He remained in that position through the 2012–13 season, which also featured a tour of India and a home series against Sri Lanka. For Australia’s ensuing Test series against South Africa in November 2012, he was chosen ahead of Haddin. He scored his second test century in the third Test against Sri Lanka in Sydney.
Brad Haddin, though, was allowed to replace Wade in the 2013 Ashes series. Haddin continued to serve as the ODI wicketkeeper for a while, however, he was eventually dropped off of Australia’s roster for the 2015 Cricket World Cup. Wade was selected for the team for the ODI and T20I series against England in 2015, however, Peter Nevill replaced him as the Test wicketkeeper after Brad Haddin retired at the end of the 2014–15 season.
After his final Test match, Wade wasn’t called up to the Test squad again until November 2016, three and a half years later. In time for the third Test against South Africa and the upcoming home series against Pakistan, he took the position of a struggling Nevill.
On January 13, 2017, against Pakistan in the opening game of a five-match series, Wade scored his first ODI century, needing 100 balls. He accomplished his feat on the final ball of Australia’s innings when Australia was in jeopardy at 5 for 95 early in the game. On the second-to-last pitch, a misfield allowed him to score two runs off a ball hit to the infield, allowing him to maintain the strike and achieve the 100-run threshold. Wade was called out LBW earlier in his innings, but the ruling was overturned after he asked for a review.
In place of the injured Steve Smith, Australia named Matthew Wade their ODI captain for their January 2017 series against New Zealand. He was dropped from the squad because the first ODI was deemed unfit for him. Aaron Finch will act as the interim captain for this game. Due to a back injury, Wade was declared out of the series before the second ODI, although Finch remained the captain for the remaining matches.

Wade, though, was part of a preliminary 26-player squad that began training on July 16, 2020, in anticipation of a potential trip to England following the COVID-19 epidemic. On August 14, 2020, Cricket Australia announced that the matches will go ahead and that Wade would be accompanying the team. On December 6, 2020, during a T20I match against India at the SCG, Wade took the Australia captaincy for the first time after Aaron Finch was forced to quit due to injury.
