Career

Michael started his professional career by competing in kart racing, winning 50 of the 75 races he took part in. He switched to car racing after almost eight years of kart racing. He won six races right away after receiving his SCCA National Licence in 1980, and the following year, he won the Northeast Division Formula Ford championship.

He joined the Kraco Enterprise group in CART in 1983. He won the IndyCar race in 1986 and was voted Rookie of the Year in 1984. Michael participated in the same championships as his father and brother in the years that followed, and he won the bulk of them.

He changed teams in 1989 and joined Newman/Haas Racing, where he collaborated with Mario Andretti. Two victories in their inaugural season helped to significantly raise his ratings. After winning the 1991 CART PPG Indy Car World Series, he gained notoriety. He participated in 17 races, winning eight of them.

He joined the Marlboro McLaren squad in 1993, where he collaborated with Ayrton Senna. He had to overcome several obstacles, and he only just finished the race.
