Career
Mohnish Pabrai worked for Tellabs, his first high-speed data networking company, from 1986 to 1991. Later, in 1989, he went on to work in international marketing and sales for the business’ international division.
He started his own IT consulting and systems integration company, TransTech Inc., later that year, in 1991, with US$30,000 from his personal 401(k) account and US$70,000 in credit card debt. Later, he sold his business to Kurt Salmon Associates for $20 million. In addition, he formed and serves as managing partner of the Pabrai Investment Funds in 1999.
Later in 2019, Pabrai tripled his investment in Micron Technology while increasing his assets in the US. Then he bought 4.12 million shares in GrafTech International Ltd., an Ohio-based company that produces petroleum coke and graphite electrodes.
He confesses that his investment approach is based on Buffett’s because he is such a major Warren Buffett fan. The Dhandho Investor: The Low-Risk Value Method to High Returns, a book about his investment philosophy, is another work he has produced. When he offered US$650,100 for a charity lunch with the iconic Warren Buffett in June 2007, he garnered media attention. Along with Guy Spier, he extended this offer.
