Career

He developed a passion for music throughout his adolescence and took on the stage name Williams Otis, which is his mother’s name. This led to the creation of many singing groups, including Otis Williams and The Siberians, The El Domingoes, and The Distance. Williams and The Distance’s manager Johnie Mae Matthews collaborated on the song “to come on,” a regional smash. Williams and his team eventually left the Distance after the subsequent recording with them was a flop. Later, Williams, Bryant, and Franklin were joined by Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams from the Primes to become “The Temptations.”

The Temptations were one of the most popular soul music groups for more than 50 years. Williams and Melvin Franklin, however, vowed to each other that they would never leave the group after the group went through so many changes and challenges. Franklin stayed with the group until 1994 when his health prevented him from continuing. At the age of 53, He was the sole remaining original member of the group after his death on February 23, 1995.

Williams is not only a singer, but he is also a co-author of the 1988 Temptation book, which acted as both the group’s history and his autobiography. He was a member of the Temptations and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. He received an honorary doctorate from Stillman College in 2006.
