He developed a passion for music throughout his adolescence and took on the stage name Williams Otis, which is his mother’s name. This led to the creation of many singing groups, including Otis Williams and The Siberians, The El Domingoes, and The Distance. Williams and The Distance’s manager Johnie Mae Matthews collaborated on the song “to come on,” a regional smash. Williams and his team eventually left the Distance after the subsequent recording with them was a flop. Later, Williams, Bryant, and Franklin were joined by Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams from the Primes to become “The Temptations.”
The Temptations were one of the most popular soul music groups for more than 50 years. Williams and Melvin Franklin, however, vowed to each other that they would never leave the group after the group went through so many changes and challenges. Williams wed Ann Cain from 1967 to 1973. He then wed Arleata Goldie Williams, his third wife, in 1983. Arleata’s daughter was the playboy playmate of the month in June 1994. He also goes by the name “Big Daddy.” In 2004, a hoax about his death was propagated on Facebook. Yet, he is today healthy and alive.
