Robert Sylvester Kelly was born on the south side of Chicago on January 8, 1967. He dropped out of high school to become a subway musician. His big break came when he took home the $100,000 prize from the television talent shows Big Break. In 1991, Kelly signed with Jive Records, and in 1993, his band Public Announcement put out the album “Born into the 90s.”
“12 Play,” R. Kelly’s first solo album, was released in November 1993. Later, the album was given a six-time platinum certification, largely due to the song “Bump n’ Grind.”
Kelly started a second career as a record producer for other performers at the same time. He produced and wrote the whole debut album by teenage pop sensation Aaliyah.
