Career

When Rebecca joined the community team for boys and was chosen as a starter, she started playing basketball as a young girl. She continued on to Southwick Tolland Regional High School, where she amassed 2740 points, breaking the previous state scoring record. Because of the University of Connecticut’s reputation for intellectual excellence, she chose to enroll there after high school.

She competed for The Huskies, a college team she helped win the 1995 National Championship. The group had a perfect 35-0 record in the end. She had such a stellar college career that she was voted 1995 National Player of the Year. The Wade Trophy, Honda Sports Award, AP Player of the Year, and USBWA Player of the Year would all be won by Lobo in the future. She was the first basketball player in history to receive All-American honors in both basketball and academics.

In 1992, she was selected to play for the USA under-18 squad, and the same year, she also competed in Mexico. She participated in the team’s competition in Brazil, where they all took home silver medals.
