Career
After playing for the United States on age-grade level teams, De Haas signed an academy deal with the South African provincial team, the Free State Cheetahs, in July 2017.
Before making his first-class debut in South African domestic competition for the Free State XV against the Griffons in the 2018 Rugby Challenge, he competed for the Free State U19 team in the 2017 Under-19 Provincial Championship as well as university team CUT Ixias in the 2018 Varsity Cup.
He signed a contract with the Free State Cheetahs, the union’s Pro14 team, in May 2018 that ran through the end of October 2020.
It was announced in February 2021 that De Haas has joined Saracens ahead of the 2021–22 season.
De Haas made his international debut for the United States in 2016 while touring Ontario, Canada, with the men’s national under-19 team (High School All-Americans). As captain, De Haas oversaw the High School All-Americans.
With the American men’s national under-20 team, De Haas made his competitive debut in the 2016 World Rugby Under-20 Trophy (Junior All-Americans).
In a 46-44 loss to Namibia on April 19, de Haas made his Junior All-American debut as a 65th-minute replacement.
De Haas started his debut game at scrum half for the Junior All-Americans on April 23 in their 32-12 victory over Hong Kong.
