Career

During his senior year at Archbishop Spalding, Gay was selected for the All-Baltimore Catholic League (All-BCL) first team and co-player of the year by the Baltimore Sun.

Rudy played college basketball for the University of Connecticut rather than the University of Maryland, and in 31 games as a rookie, he averaged 11.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 28.8 minutes.

Rudy Gay played in 33 games for the UConn Huskies as a sophomore, averaging 15.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 30.8 minutes per game.

Gay was chosen by the Houston Rockets on April 24, 2006, with the eighth overall choice in the NBA Draft.

On July 12, a few days later, he was dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies, where in his rookie season, he averaged 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 27 minutes.

By 2011, he had made a name for himself as the NBA’s top small forward, with career-high marks in seven key statistical categories.

He agreed to a five-year, $82 million contract with the Grizzlies on July 8, 2010, and on February 2, 2012, he established himself as the team’s all-time top signee.

Gay spent six seasons with the Grizzlies until being moved on January 30, 2013, to the Toronto Raptors. His 74 points in three games set an institutional record.

On December 9 of the same year, he was traded to the Sacramento Kings.

During the 2014–2015 season, Gay started to suffer from sporadic injuries that limited his activity and game time, starting with a concussion sustained during a collision with former Grizzlies teammate Marc Gasol.

Then, on January 18, 2017, he suffered a left Achilles tendon rupture, which rendered him unable to play the remainder of his contract’s final season with the Kings.

On July 6, 2017, Gay was chosen by the San Antonio Spurs. In December of that same year, he had right-heel injuries, which forced him to miss a few weeks of action.

On August 5, 2013, in Aspen, Colorado, Gay wed his lifelong love, Ecko Wray. The couple has been dating since 2004.

The pair announced their engagement in October 2012.
