Career
Lafferty spent most of his freshman and sophomore years at Hollidaysburg Area High School before applying to prep schools. He had already decided to attend Shady Side Academy before a spot opened up at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. Lafferty was chosen for the 2014 Prep School All-New England squad after finishing the 2013–14 season with a career-high 21 goals and 34 assists for 55 points in 25 games. Throughout his three seasons at the Deerfield Academy, Lafferty scored 38 goals and collected 57 assists for a total of 95 points in 74 games. After graduating in 2014, Lafferty was chosen by the Penguins in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
Despite being chosen, Lafferty played four seasons of college hockey with the Brown Bears men’s ice hockey team from 2014 to 2018. During his first season, Lafferty took part in all 31 games, placing fourth on the team with eight assists and sixth with four goals. As a freshman playing both hockey and Division I golf, Lafferty qualified for the 2015 Ivy League Men’s Golf Championship. The following year, Lafferty’s scoring output decreased; he finished the season with four goals and six assists for 10 points.
When he returned to the Brown Bears as a junior, Lafferty had a significant season. As of January 2017, his 19 assists and eight goals placed him third in the ECAC scoring standings and fourth in points per game. Lafferty’s college career came to an end on March 7, 2018, when he agreed to an amateur tryout contract with the Penguins for the remainder of the 2017–18 season.
