Seth Jones

Seth Jones Wiki/Biography

Seth Jones, an American professional ice hockey defender, competes with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League. Seth Jones was selected by The Nashville Predators with the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

He was born on October 3, 1994. His age is 27 years old as of 2023.

Jones’s parents, Amy and Ronald “Popeye” Jones were playing for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) when he was born in Arlington, Texas. Out of the three children the couple has, he is the middle child; Justin is the older brother and Caleb is the younger. Jones’ family lived in Denver, Colorado, when he was five years old, and his father played basketball for the Denver Nuggets. Jones started playing hockey about this period. Justin desired to play inline hockey with his friends. Justin and Seth received inline skates in the winter in addition to ice hockey skates. When Popeye encountered Hockey Hall of Famer Joe Sakic, who was then playing in Denver with the Colorado Avalanche, at a game at the Pepsi Center, he asked him for advice to help his boys become better players because Popeye didn’t know much about the sport. Sakic suggested that Popeye get his boys some skating lessons because he thought they would be big and naturally athletic. As a result, Seth spent a year taking skating lessons, and at age six he began playing hockey in a league. He attended Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final in 2001, the year the Avalanche won.

Career

Seth Jones began playing competitive ice hockey with Denver-area clubs and travel teams when he was eight years old. He participated in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments in 2005, 2006, and 2007 with three different Colorado junior ice hockey teams. Jones moved back to Texas with his family when he was twelve years old. At the same time, he decided to enroll in the US National Team Development Program (NTDP).

Seth Jones collected 33 points in 31 games while he was a member of the Dallas Stars Bantam Major team. In the 2009 Bantam draft, Jones was selected by the Everett Silvertips with the eleventh overall pick. He was supposed to be taken higher, but because of concerns that he would decide to pursue college hockey rather than in the Western Hockey League (WHL), he was selected lower than planned. After being chosen, Jones played one more season in Dallas with the Stars U-18 team before joining the NTDP.

In his first year with the NTDP, Jones worked with the under-17 and under-18 teams. He served as the co-captain of the U-17 squad. In 37 games with the NTDP, Jones recorded 21 points. These games featured contests against teams from levels II and III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as well as league play in the United States Hockey League (USHL). He led the team in defensive scoring with 21 points. He remained a co-captain the next season, although, with 31 points in 52 games, he finished second on the team in defensive scoring.

After his second season, Jones had to decide whether to play his draft year with the Silvertips in the WHL or the NCAA. Jones decided Everett was not the best place for him, and he had made plans to register at the University of North Dakota. After realizing that Jones would not be playing for them, the Silvertips kept Jones’ rights but transferred them to the Portland Winterhawks in exchange for a conditional bantam draft pick.

In a deal that also resulted in the acquisition of two players and the rights to two additional players two weeks later, Portland obtained Jones’ rights. Throughout his tenure with Portland, Jones was projected to go first overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Jones was ranked first overall by the International Scouting Services and first among skaters from North America by the NHL Central Scouting at the halfway point of the season.

In the National Hockey League on October 3, 2013, Jones made his debut for the Nashville Predators against the St. Louis Blues. Jones scored his first NHL goal on October 12, 2013, by defeating Evgeni Nabokov of the New York Islanders.

On January 6, 2016, while Jones was still under the terms of his entry-level deal for the 2015–16 season, the Predators traded him to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for center Ryan Johansen. Having played in 199 NHL games, he had 63 points at the time of the deal.

On June 29, 2016, Jones, a pending restricted free agent, entered into a long-term contract with the Blue Jackets for a six-year, $32.4 million deal.

Jones’ right foot suffered a hairline fracture, which resulted in him being placed on injured reserve for the 2016–17 campaign. Before getting hurt, he had the most ice time for the Blue Jackets. After being brought off injured reserve after missing six games, Jones concluded the year with a career-high in points, assists, and goals.

Jones participated in the Under-17 (U-17) Four Nations Cup in 2010 to make his international debut. Jones helped Team USA win the competition and take first place by scoring four points and one goal. He later participated in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge for the USA in 2011.

Team USA finished the preliminary round unblemished after winning all four of its games. After defeating Canada Pacific 6-5 in overtime in their semifinal match, Team USA proceeded to the gold medal game. The silver medal was won by Team USA despite losing the tournament’s championship game 5-3. Jones won game MVP honors for the American squad despite their loss.

Jones finished the competition with a goal and two points. He was selected for the competition’s all-star team. Later in the year, Jones joined Team USA for the 2011 IIHF World U18 Championships. After going undefeated in the opening round and semifinal, the US progressed to the gold medal match.

Team USA was down by two goals in the third quarter of the championship game. The Americans eventually came back to level the game and force overtime with 1:29 remaining in regulation. The USA scored four minutes into the extra period to secure the gold medal. Jones finished the tournament with three assists in six games.
