Career

Stan Van Gundy began his coaching career at the University of Vermont as an assistant. In 1983, the NAIA named him “District 5 Coach of the Year.” Following that, from 1984 to 1985, he guided the “Castleton Spartans” to victory in the NAIA’s Mayflower Conference. Later, the Castleton Spartans won the 1985 NAIA District 5 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

In 1987, Stan engaged in a similar action while working as an assistant coach at Canisius College. Later on, from 1988 to 1992, he advanced to become the head coach of the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He was a University of Wisconsin assistant coach as well. Later, in 2994, he was named the Wisconsin Badgers’ head coach.

Stan served as an assistant coach with the Miami Heat of the NBA for eight years. He oversaw the 42-game winning streak this team compiled in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Stan announced his resignation as the head coach of the Miami Heat on December 12, 2005.
