He played in a number of bands while still in high school. At the time, his mother constantly urged him to pursue a career in music. Later, Scott Mathews founded “Ice” in Sacramento, California. After disbanding because of bad management, Steve moved to Thousand Oaks, California, where he formed “Pieces” with Tim Bogert, Eddie Tuduri, and Denver Cross. The “Pieces” band broke up because they were unable to secure a recording deal. After that, He joined another band named “Alien Project,” but felt driven to leave when the band’s bassist, Richard Michaels, passed away in a vehicle accident.
Steve decided to give up music and returned to Lemoore, California. His mother insisted that he take calls from Walter Herbert, the former manager of the band “Journey,” and when he did, his career with the band “Journey” officially began. Infinity, his first album as Journey’s lead singer, was released in 1978. Nine albums were totaled, all of which did well on the charts, and were released by the band.
“Street Talk,” his first solo album, was published in 1984. His second studio album, “For the Love of Strange Medicine,” was released in 1994 and achieved financial success, peaking at number 15 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
