Berry’s passion for music developed early, and he gave his first public performance at Sumner High School. He was committed to a reformatory from 1944 to 1947 after being found guilty of armed robbery while still a high school student. After his release, Berry got married and started working at an auto assembly plant. Berry joined the Johnnie Johnson Trio at the beginning of 1953 after being inspired by T-Bone Walker’s blues guitar riffs and stage presence.
By the end of the 1950s, Berry had a solid following thanks to several successful albums, on-screen performances, and a successful touring career.
