When Tom Steyer joined Morgan Stanley as an analyst for two years in 1979, his professional career officially got underway. After receiving his MBA from Stanford, he started working for Goldman Sachs and became an expert in risk arbitrage.

In 1986, he joined the private equity company, Hellman and Friedman. This project led to the establishment of San Francisco, California-based Farallon Capital Management. This was his most lucrative business endeavor, making enormous profits and rising to become the fourth-largest hedge fund in the world.
